Prompt Response - Episode 3

Gunther, are these leftovers still good?

Episode 3 was the highest attended, most unhinged Prompt Response yet! Thanks to everyone who joined; we had a blast interacting with you all.

Before we get to the real content, I want to touch on the conversation about reading that Jay and I had at the beginning. He’s still reading Twilight for some reason, and recently switched from Team Jacob to Team Edward. You are allowed to do that, folks! Changing your mind is healthy!

I’m currently on a re-read of the fantastic graphic novel series, Locke & Key. This inevitably raised a conversation about its author, Joe Hill. We talked briefly about his genius and how interesting it is that he hid his identity for so long (he’s Stephen King’s son!?) and became successful on his own merits. I had the pleasure of seeing Joe live in my hometown last year and wrote about it. I’d encourage you to check that post out, but more than anything, watch the video of the live event that I linked within the post. The man is fascinating, and as writers, we all can learn from him.

My name is Andrew, and I use this Substack to share stories and learn about other writers. I am the author of The Wheel, a serialized novella about loss, grief, and the way forward. I also run a live interview series called On Writers…

Prompt Responses from last week:

The great thing about Prompt Response is that you can still participate, even if you don’t make the live event. We kicked off the night by reading new stories from Wendy Russell and Martin Maenza that came into our subscriber chat last week—one about Bigfoot and books, and the other about talking capes. There are more, though, and you can read them all here:

This week’s Prompt Responses:

Since it seemed to work well last week, last nights shenaningans again took place in our subscriber chat:

If you can’t watch the video, make sure you hop into the chat and read the stories from Wendy Russell, Martin Maenza, and Hallie Jules instead. Additionally, Professor Jay took some time to teach us about the Johari window. The template for this exercise is located at the top of the chat.

Prompts for next time (respond!):

For next week, we will use the same prompt that we used in the chat linked above, along with an extra, just in case the first doesn’t suit your fancy. Feel free to leave your story in the chat with the rest, or post it to your publication and link to this post/tag us. Either way, we will read it live next week.

Here are the prompts:

PROMPT 1: Mary and Isaac (and Gunther Thorntree) must decide whether to eat questionable leftovers.

PROMPT 2: Writers are being murdered at a mystery-writers’ convention.

One way or another, we hope to hear from you soon. Cheers, prompt responsers!

We started this publication from scratch by choice (zero subscribers!). Help us grow the thing by subscribing and restacking to your friends! We absolutely enjoy engaging with you all, either live on the air or through this post. Let’s do more of it!
